Answer engine optimization is the practice of structuring your content and your website so AI assistants can retrieve it, understand it, and cite it accurately when someone asks a question. The goal is not a ranking position. It is being the source inside the answer.
Traditional SEO competes for a position on a results page. AEO competes to be quoted inside a generated answer, where there is no page of ten options and often only two or three sources are named at all.
Google AI Overviews draw roughly 76% of their cited URLs from pages already ranking in the top ten, and ChatGPT matches Bing's top ten results around 87% of the time. Ranking remains the foundation; AEO decides whether a ranking page gets quoted.
If an AI crawler cannot reach your site, nothing else matters. Blocked user agents, content locked in images or scripts, and slow or unstable responses remove a site from consideration silently.
Being cited incorrectly is its own failure. When your facts disagree across your site, your listings and third-party sources, assistants hedge, generalize, or describe you from someone else's writing.
These are measured correlations from published citation studies rather than opinions about what ought to work. Each one is directly actionable.
Semrush's AI Overviews study found pages carrying schema markup were cited about 2.1 times more often than pages without it. Schema tells an assistant what a page is rather than leaving it to infer.
Content containing tables is cited roughly 2.5 times more often, and listicle-format content accounts for around half of top AI citations. Both present discrete, extractable facts, which is exactly what a generated answer needs.
Around 76% of ChatGPT's most-cited pages had been updated within the previous 30 days. A page published once and left alone loses citation share to one that is genuinely maintained.
Content that cites outside sources is several times more likely to be cited itself than content that only references its own site. Assistants weigh corroboration, and a page that stands alone reads as an assertion.
Each of these fails silently. The site works, nothing errors, and no report shows the absence.
Content that builds toward a conclusion gives an assistant nothing to extract. The answer-first format puts a direct, complete response of roughly 40 to 60 words immediately under a question-shaped heading, then expands.
A robots rule or a firewall setting refuses AI user agents. This is one of the most common findings in an audit and one of the fastest to fix.
Different names, addresses, service lists or hours across your own properties. Faced with conflicting facts, an assistant either hedges or omits you entirely.
If nobody queries the assistants directly, the only visibility signal is a rankings report that does not measure citation at all. What is not measured does not get fixed.
Answer engine optimization, or AEO, is the practice of structuring content and websites so AI assistants can retrieve, understand and cite them accurately in generated answers. It focuses on being named as a source inside an answer rather than on holding a position in a list of links.
SEO competes for a position on a results page. AEO competes to be the cited source inside a generated answer. They overlap heavily: most AI citations come from pages that already rank well, so AEO is best understood as an extension of SEO rather than a replacement for it.
The terms are used interchangeably in practice. Generative engine optimization and answer engine optimization describe the same work. Answer engine optimization is the phrase most people actually search for, which is why it is the term used here.
Query them directly. Ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot the questions your customers would ask, then record whether you appear, whether the description is accurate, and which source is cited instead when you do not. Repeat monthly so the trend is visible.
Technical access issues can change what an assistant knows within days to weeks once the site is recrawled. Citation share on competitive questions follows ranking and authority, which is a matter of months. Anyone promising fast citation on competitive commercial questions is overselling it.
Often better than for large ones. Assistants favor clear, specific, well-structured answers, and specificity is easier for a focused organization than for a large generalist. Pages well outside the first page of Google are regularly cited when they carry the clearest answer to a specific question.
Retrieval. Confirm AI crawlers are not blocked, that key information is in readable text rather than images or scripts, and that your core facts agree everywhere they appear. Content formatting only matters once the assistants can actually reach and parse the page.
