How Do I Choose The Right Sermon Topic?

The list of sermon ideas we have for you below is crazy long. How do you choose the right sermons for your church audience?

If you are reading this post, you probably agree that Jesus was the most influential person to ever live. If we want to know how to choose the right sermon, we should first look at how Jesus influenced the people in and around his ministry every day.

Jesus used a simple 5 step process to powerfully influence people around his ministry. If you would like to read in-depth about this process, I have written extensively on it in other blogs and in our article titled, Church Marketing Online: The Biblical Way To Grow Your Church.

In this post, we will take a cursory look at this. The five steps Jesus used to influence the people around his ministry were:

  1. Jesus Went Out: Jesus went out to where the people were (Ex. He went to Geneserat: He didn’t wait for Peter, James, and John to ‘come to church’ – Luke 5:1-11).
  2. Jesus Knew His Audience: Jesus knew who the people were and understood their deepest problems (Ex. He saw fishermen with no fish).
  3. Jesus Met A Non-Spiritual Need: Jesus Met their NON-SPIRITUAL NEEDS first (Ex. Jesus gave them a ton of fish).
  4. Jesus Shifts To The Spiritual Need: Jesus shifted the conversation from the non-spiritual need to the spiritual need – linking the two so his audience would understand the importance of the spiritual need (Ex. “Follow me and I will make you fishers of men”).
  5. Jesus Gives A Call To Action: Jesus called his audience to action with one clear request (Ex. Follow me – Matthew 4:19, Matthew 19:21).

Jesus’ entire strategy revolves around meeting the needs of the people around him. He begins by meeting the non-spiritual needs of those who don’t know him.

Then, when he has shown these people outside of his ministry that he understands how important their worldly needs are, he links the worldly needs to their spiritual needs.

Why did he do this?

Jesus understood that people IN THE WORLD cannot understand or relate to the kingdom of heaven until he grounded the heavenly perspective in something they could understand.

Many people have very impactful worldly needs that distract them from their spiritual needs (like food, water, clothing, etc.) Eternal issues can always be put off to tomorrow in the eyes of the unbeliever but food can’t wait. When Jesus healed the sight of the blind, gave fish to the fishermen, or healed the leprosy of the lepers, he was alleviating the worldly need that was keeping his audience from thinking about more important spiritual matters.

sermon topics

Jesus’ strategy also reveals to his audience that he understands and cares deeply about what HIS AUDIENCE believed their needs to be. Of course, you and I both know the most important thing for the people connected with your ministry to know is Jesus. He meets the ultimate need.

But they may not understand that to the same degree you do, and they won’t be open to hearing what YOU THINK until they know you value what THEY THINK. This is the same thing every pastor has heard about youth ministry, “Kids don’t care what you know until they know you care.”

That’s not just true in youth ministry, that’s just true in general.

Make it a point to strategically meet the deepest felt needs of your audience. When you do, the door to their hearts will open, and be much more receptive to the messages you preach on Sunday.

So what does this have to do with sermon topics?

Everything.

When you choose a sermon topic, you must be considering what the most deeply felt need of your audience is at any given time.

If you only remember one thing from this entire article remember this:

People go where their needs are met.

People stay where their needs are met consistently.

If your sermons aren’t strategically targeting what YOUR AUDIENCE believes to be their most deeply felt needs, they won’t be listening to your sermons for very long.

What phase of life is your audience in? What are the biggest problems they are facing? Are they raising children? Is it grief & death? Do they struggle financially?

As a pastor, you want to live and breathe the needs of the people in your congregation. When you know what your audience needs, you can pick a sermon that will change lives every time.

Faith Vs. Works Sermon Topics

Possibly the biggest reason church audiences disengage from Sunday sermon topics is the result of an unhealthy split between faith-based sermon topics and works-based sermon topics.

In many churches, the Sunday message is the same old “have faith in Jesus” sermon said a little differently than the week before. While faith in Christ is the cornerstone of the Christian life, we are also supposed to build upon this with works (which are done out of gratitude for our salvation, not to get salvation.)

Once we begin to understand the elementary teachings of the scripture (milk), we are supposed to graduate to the more difficult application of those teachings (meat).

sermon topics

In fact, though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food! Anyone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness. But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.” – Hebrews 5:12-14

Many church leaders choose sermon topics that are milk every week when their audience wants and needs meat.

If you give milk to an audience who needs meat, they will find another pastor to give them meat instead.

Of course, the opposite is also true (but far less common from our experience).

Maybe your church has strategically decided to focus solely on evangelism and bringing people to Christ. If this is your focus, then preaching exclusively on the elementary teachings of the faith is a great thing to do!

If you like most ministries that fall into the “too much milk” category, then it’s probably time to start considering sermon topics that will help your audience develop the practical skills they need to live a righteous life. Consider difficult things to master like marriage, finances, work, disagreements, in-law issues, etc.

There is no right amount of milk vs meat to have in your church so long as the split you choose meets the needs of your audience.

Comfortable Vs. Uncomfortable Sermon Topics

The next big reason people disengage from sermon topics and churches more broadly, is because there is an unhealthy split between comfortable and uncomfortable sermon topics.

Primarily in the West, we try to please our church audiences with sugary treats on Sunday mornings, big flashy events, epic guitar solos, and comfortable sermon topics. We think that if we have more excitement and comfort than other churches, then people will come to our church.

This is untrue. The reason the events have to be more flashy every year and the expectation for increasing comfort and amenities is on the rise is because people are increasingly bored by their churches.

Why not just quit going to church altogether and just go to some fancy spa or fitness club?

If you are going to make church easy, people are going to move to the church that does it the best, and it won’t be yours. It will be a church with a bigger budget.

The good news is that people don’t want ease, entertainment, and comfort. That’s just what we have conditioned them to expect.

sermon topics

People really want a challenge. And adventure. They want purpose and something worth sacrificing for.  People want a vision and a reason to do something really difficult with their lives. If you don’t believe me, take Jordan Peterson for example:

Jordan Peterson is an internationally renowned secular/conservative scholar who primarily speaks to young men. He also now has the full backing of the Daily Wire. When Dr. Peterson speaks to young men, he never says anything easy, entertaining, or comfortable. He tells them to take ownership of their life. “Get up and make your dang bed. You can’t put your community in order until you put your own house in order”, he says.

Dr. Peterson doesn’t accept excuses. He shows his audience that he is living out his teachings, and if they want to follow him, then they need to live them out too. The crazy part is, his audience LOVES it. They want more responsibility. They gladly pay through the nose to go see him speak. Dr. Jordan Peterson is the rockstar of conservative scholars because HE ASKS MORE of his audience, not less.

Everything he says is uncomfortable because it’s intended to hold his audience to account for what they are doing with their lives. And it works.

You would be surprised with the amount of engagement you would receive if you started preaching more challenging sermon topics. People in the west have everything they could ever want but depression and anxiety are at all-time highs. Why? Because they have no purpose.

Give your audience a bigger challenge with your sermon topics.

Results Of Choosing The Right Sermon Topics

When you successfully begin to choose sermon ideas that meet the deeply felt needs of your audiences and that challenge them to take massive action, you will notice that church engagement increases all around. People will begin taking ownership of their own lives. People will start making changes. When you connect this necessity for action to the mission and vision of your church, people will start to take ownership of your ministry as well.

When you create the expectation that people do the hard work that sanctification demands (pick up their cross daily), a new wave of healthy growth, purpose, and optimism will spread through your ministry. This is because you have begun meeting people’s REAL needs, not their superficial needs for comfort and entertainment.

Meeting real needs says something like this: Life can be hard sometimes. You have a need because there is a problem in your life that hasn’t yet been solved. It hasn’t been solved because it’s a BIG problem. We are going to invite the victory of Jesus into that problem, but it requires you to do your part too. It’s going to be difficult, but we will do it together.

Choosing sermon topics like this will not only meet the needs of your existing congregation, but it will inspire them to bring other people to your church when they begin to see the fruit in their own lives that were inspired by your sermon topics.

How to Choose Sermon Topics That Touch The Soul

But how do you find engaging sermon ideas that your audience will come back for over and over?

Modeling Jesus’ 5 steps above, it’s not about what needs you think your audience has, it starts with what needs your audience thinks they have.

To determine what your audience feels they need, survey your congregation with these three questions:

  1. What is the biggest problem you are currently facing?
  2. What is the biggest need in your life right now?
  3. What was the most impactful experience you have ever had with a church?

The first two questions are two sides of the same coin. An unmet need is the result of a problem. And a problem creates a need. Asking them both brings additional clarity to your understanding of the needs of your audience.

In question three, impactful experiences were impactful because they met a need. The fulfillment of the need is what creates the impact. Jesus made such an impact by giving Peter, James, and John fish. Weirdly, it made such a powerful impact that they then left everything (including the fish) to follow Jesus.

sermon ideas

Give this survey to your church audience and aggregate the total responses. What you will find is that some common needs will stick out in your survey data.

You might find that your audience is struggling with addiction, poverty, lack of motivation, parenting, marriage, etc.

When you Identify the overarching needs of your audience, begin choosing your sermon ideas based on which needs are most pressing.

How To Choose The Best Sermon Ideas

When we pick sermon subjects at random off a list online, the likelihood that we speak to our SPECIFIC audience in a meaningful way is practically zero. Imagine if I tried to speak to my wife in a meaningful way by picking her birthday gift off a post titled “100 best birthday gifts for women”. That’s not going to work out well.

If you already know the deeply felt needs of your audience, using a list of ideas to address their specific needs strategically is great. We recommend that you choose sermon subjects that follow this strategic

  1. Does the sermon idea align with the mission and vision God has called our church to?  (If God has called your ministry to international missions, why are we preaching about the necessity of helping the homeless? That’s the job of another church.)
  2. Does the sermon idea equip our audience to fulfill this vision in their own lives? (If your church exists to create healed inner-city families, do your sermons have Biblical strategies to build healthy relationships?)
  3. Does the sermon idea challenge your audience to take action?

When Do You Need A New Sermon Idea?

Many pastors feel that they can’t stay on the same sermon idea for too long. So how long is it okay to preach about the same sermon topic? When the NT writers preached, they didn’t preach for its own sake, they preached to create a result in the lives of their listeners. Many of the NT books were written as exhortations to specific churches where they were intended to change certain behaviors in that church or to reinforce other positive qualities.

Similarly, your sermon topics are intended to produce a specific type of fruit in the lives of your listeners. If the problem they are facing is not resolved, then your sermon topic is not exhausted.

For example, if you are preaching on how to communicate in marriage and your surveys, Bible studies, and conversations indicate that the couples in your congregation are still struggling to resolve conflict in a healthy way, then it’s time to double down on your sermon idea, not change it.

When you let your congregation know that you are going to stay on the subject until their lives improve, you have issued a challenge. You have told them that the old status quo is no longer acceptable and that sitting in church and listening is no longer enough.

If you feel complacency is an even bigger issue in your audience, it may be time to switch your sermon topic long enough to address the complacency. Then shift back to the original idea until people begin to take ownership of their lives.

You don’t need a new sermon idea or sermon topic every week or even every month. You should change your sermon subject as frequently as your audience has overcome a problem in one area of discipleship and is ready for a new challenge.

Changing subjects every week can disengage your audience because too many subjects too quickly are impossible to apply.

    1. Pastor Chinelo,
Thank you for your comment. As long as your sermons address a powerful problem or need from your audience, people will be drawn to listen to you speak. The important part is that you must address problems your audience believes they have, not problems you think they have. That is the difference between growing churches and dying churches. Address problems your audience actually has. God bless you and your ministry.
