Why You Need An Advisory Board (EDITed)

“Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisors they succeed.” Proverbs 15:22

When you have the right team of advisors behind you, your plans will succeed much more often.

Why is this the case?

What has been will be again,
    what has been done will be done again;
    there is nothing new under the sun.
Is there anything of which one can say,
    “Look! This is something new”?

Ecclesiastes 1:9-10

With advisors, you could find success much more quickly than if you had to learn everything the hard way. This is because advisors already have a wealth of experience, and you can reach new heights by standing on their shoulders, as the saying goes.

Since I was young, I read books that told me to get mentors and advisors. So for 15 years, I searched for trustworthy people to guide me along the path I was called to.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, I couldn’t find advisors or mentors who had already gotten the results I sought for my own life. I had no one to help me develop more quickly.

So I used books as my advisors. While books are a great source of wisdom, they can’t assess your specific situation and tell you what to do. That meant that I had to spend the better part of 17 years studying books, and using trial-and-error to discover what worked in ministry, business, and life.

When I was 31, I finally found someone who was excited to mentor me. He was a firm believer, and was about 15 years older than me. Not only was he an attentive husband and father (supporting his family spiritually, emotionally, etc.), but he was also deeply involved in the church and ran an extraordinarily successful marketing firm. These were the results I wanted in my own life.

I sat down with him to discuss Clickmill and ask for guidance on my next steps. He gave advice that I found intimidating, but he found laughably obvious.

Meeting 1: After our first meeting, I spent a few months making the suggested changes (which were not easy). I subsequently saw company income triple, and I was able to start consulting on a regular basis.

Up to that point I had spent nearly 15 years teaching myself everything I could to get where I was, but after a meeting that was just 1 hour long, I saw explosive growth.

Meeting 2: Shortly after my second meeting with him, I created a fully functional internship program where we accepted 6 enthusiastic interns. They each wanted to work with Clickmill for 200-500 hours. After I spent over a thousand hours training my first wave of interns, they were able to take over the day-to-day operations of Clickmill. That freed me up to complete this course, which had been on the back burner for around 24 months.

The right advisers already know “what has been before” which means they can give you the fast track to “what will be again”.
